If your travels are guided by books, Porto might be your perfect chapter. Portugal’s second city has long been entwined with literary history—from the 19th-century novelist Camilo Castelo Branco, who penned a tale of forbidden love from his prison cell in just 15 days, to J.K. Rowling, who drafted the beginnings of Harry Potter over coffee in an ornate Belle Époque café. Add to that one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores, a five-star hotel devoted to Portuguese writers, and intimate cafés made for relaxing with a novel, and Porto reveals itself as a destination where literature and travel entwine seamlessly.
Livraria Lello: One of the World’s Most Beautiful Bookstores

If you only have time for one literary stop in Porto, make it Livraria Lello. Frequently named one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world, it’s a temple for readers with its stained-glass skylight, gilded woodwork, and iconic red staircase.
What to Know Before You Go
Tickets are required. Timed-entry tickets must be purchased in advance. Your ticket price is credited toward the purchase of any book (excluding souvenirs and journals), making it a worthwhile investment.
Timing matters. Lines are longest in the mornings. During my January visit, an afternoon slot resulted in a surprisingly short wait. Walk by earlier in the day, though, and you’ll likely see a line that winds around the block.
Harry Potter connection (or not). Many travelers flock here believing this bookstore inspired J.K. Rowling. Rowling has denied the link, though she did live in Porto for a time. So come for the atmosphere, not the myths.
Expect crowds—and kindness. The staircase is the Instagram hotspot. When Chris took my photo, I’d just finished snapping pictures for another visitor. Everyone was patient, making the experience feel more joyful than rushed.
Literary Highlights
Don’t miss the room dedicated to José Saramago, Portugal’s Nobel Prize-winning author, best known for Blindness. You’ll also find temporary exhibitions and a wide selection of books in multiple languages—ideal souvenirs for your shelf at home.

Torel Palace Porto: A 5-Star Literary Escape

For a hotel that matches the mood of your bookish getaway, look no further than Torel Palace Porto.
One December evening, Chris and I tucked into the hotel’s library, where books lined the walls and others seemed to float overhead on nearly invisible strings. Cocktails from the on-site Blind Restaurant arrived at our side as we settled into deep armchairs—a literary masterpiece moment I’d envisioned when booking our stay.
Rooms Dedicated to Writers
Each of the 24 rooms is inspired by a Portuguese author. Our suite honored José Régio, one of the country’s most influential 20th-century writers. A portrait of him greeted us at the door, while his books and photographs added character to the space. Even the nightstand held a carefully chosen title: José Régio: Journeys and Speeches of a Life.
Dining Inspired by Literature
The Michelin-starred Blind Restaurant draws inspiration from Saramago’s Blindness. While we only enjoyed cocktails upstairs, its Blind Emotions Menu offers an immersive dining experience. Breakfast is served here too, and the moody elegance of the room lingers in memory.
For literary travelers, design lovers, and anyone seeking romance in Porto, Torel Palace Porto delivers a stay that feels like living inside a story.

Majestic Café: Belle Époque Charm + Harry Potter Ties

According to Rowling’s biographer, the author worked on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone at Majestic Café. Whether you come for its Harry Potter lore or its Belle Époque interiors, this café is a must for a booklover’s Porto weekend.
We arrived early for breakfast and ordered coffee with their signature French Toast topped with sweet egg cream. It was delicious, unexpected, and one of the highlights of our trip. I’ve also been back for lunch, though breakfast is my favorite.
📍 Rua de Santa Catarina 112, Porto
🕘 Open Monday–Saturday, 9:00 AM–11:00 PM; closed Sundays
🍽 Must-try: Majestic French Toast with Sweet Egg Cream
STORY Brunch & Cocktails: A Cozy Spot for Reading Breaks

Not every literary moment has to involve grand libraries and gilded bookshops. Sometimes it’s a hot cup of tea on a gray Porto afternoon.
For that, we love STORY Brunch & Cocktails, a Ukrainian-owned café serving hearty brunches and generous portions. On a winter day, I ordered their Immunity Tea, which features fresh apple slices, cinnamon sticks, and honey steeped in hot water. Chris and I shared a sweet baked Camembert topped with fruit, which was every bit as indulgent as it sounds.
It’s the kind of café where you could happily take a reading break between sightseeing stops. After all, it’s kind of in its name.

Two Literary Landmarks We Missed (But Hope to Visit Next Time)
I left Porto ignorant of a couple of places that should have been on my literary wish list:
Portuguese Centre of Photography – Once Porto’s municipal prison, this striking building is where author Camilo Castelo Branco wrote Love of Perdition in just 15 days. Outside, you’ll find Largo Amor de Perdição, named for the novel, and a 2012 statue of the author by Mestre Francisco Simões.
Cordoaria Garden – This peaceful green space honors literary figures, including statues of Ramalho Ortigão and Soares de Passos (António Nobre).
Both locations are within a two-minute walk of one another. Plus, they’re close to Livraria Lello. If only I had known! Oh well. They’re on my list now.
A Weekend Well-Read
A booklover’s weekend in Porto can be as indulgent or as relaxed as you like. Pair your time at Livraria Lello with a stay at Torel Palace, add in breakfast at Majestic Café, and wrap it up with a cozy tea at STORY Brunch & Cocktails. Along the way, you’ll find yourself steeped not just in stories, but in the atmosphere of a city that’s as inspiring as the books it celebrates.
