A Romantic Winter Weekend in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula

Cozy Up in Keweenaw: A Romantic Winter Getaway for Couples

Winter transforms Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula into a snow-covered wonderland, perfect for couples seeking a cozy and adventurous escape. From charming local shops to outdoor adventures and indulgent dining experiences, Keweenaw offers a cozy, romantic getaway. If you’re ready to bundle up and embrace winter’s magic, here’s how to spend an unforgettable weekend in this scenic Upper Peninsula gem.

Day One

Start Your Morning with a Taste of Finland

Begin your day at Nisu Bakery & Cafe in Hancock, where Finnish pastries and cardamom coffee will transport you straight to Finland. Order a Korvapuustia (a Finnish cinnamon roll) and soak in the cozy ambiance.

Browse Books, Finnish Finds, Nostalgic Toys

A short stroll away, North Wind Books at the Finnish American Heritage Center offers an eclectic selection of books, Moomin memorabilia, and Marimekko gifts. It’s the perfect spot to pick up a literary souvenir or a charming gift for each other.

As you head towards your lunchtime destination, stop into K.C. Bonker’s Toys & Coffee, where play is a serious endeavor. They have all sorts of toys, including nostalgic ones from the 1970s and ‘80s. It’s a fun stroll down memory lane and a great place to shop for children, grandchildren, and the young at heart.

Fuel Up with a Mexican Feast

Arroz con Chorizo or Veggie Yucatan, paired with house-made guacamole and your favorite hot sauce. Sit down and enjoy a margarita if day drinking is on your romantic winter weekend wish list. We stuck to soda when we went, so we could stay upright while snowshoeing in Swedetown.

Take a Snowy Stroll in Swedetown

Keweenaw’s winter landscape is best explored on snowshoes. Pick up rentals at Cross Country Sports in Calumet and head to Swedetown, where well-marked trails wind through pristine forests. The quiet beauty of the snow-covered pines makes for a dreamy, romantic setting.

Dine with a View at the Observatory Lounge

Chris and Melissa dining at a table in the Observatory Lounge at Hampton Inn & Suites Houghton. The view has a snowy background and a ship associated with Isle Royale National Park. Glasses of Red Wine and Beef Wellingtons are on the table.

For an intimate dinner, head to the Observatory Lounge, perched on the 7th floor of the Hampton Inn & Suites. Enjoy breathtaking views of Keweenaw Peninsula while savoring expertly crafted dishes like Beef Wellington paired with a nice glass of wine, or a handcrafted cocktail.

Day 2

Explore Downtown Houghton’s Shops

Spend your morning browsing Chickadees, Grace + Gather, and Good Times Music for unique Upper Peninsula gifts, stylish apparel, and maybe a guitar*. Sheldon Avenue is packed with boutique shops, so leave extra time for retail therapy.

*In case you didn’t know, Chris of Chris + Melissa plays the guitar and wants to be a rockstar. You can check out his I Still Want to be a Rockstar channel on YouTube.

Lunch at a Houghton Classic: The Ambassador

Step into history at The Ambassador, a family-run restaurant known for its charming murals, chandeliers, and house-made Cudighi sandwiches. Chris loved the Cudighi sandwich. If you prefer pizza, the Greek Pizza caught my eye, and I sure think it is a must-try!

Relax & Recharge at Takka Sauna

Nothing says romance like a private sauna experience at Takka Sauna Portage. This 75-minute retreat melts away any lingering stress with essential oils, a crackling fire, and stunning views of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.

Sip & Savor at Keweenaw Brewing Co.

Chris and Melissa cheers-ing their beers at Keweenaw Brewing Company. Both are wearing stocking hats. Melissa is in a green sweater with blue stripes. Chris is wearing black.

Enjoy a casual afternoon drink at Keweenaw Brewing Company, where you can cozy up with a Caramel Porter Nitro Brew or an IPA. While some of their brews are available year-round, others rotate with the seasons. The welcoming atmosphere and live music make it an ideal spot for a relaxed date.

End the Night at The Library

Cap off your romantic weekend at The Library, a legendary Houghton restaurant. Cozy up with a Hot Toddy or martini and enjoy their Creamy Swiss Au Gratin soup before indulging in a hearty sandwich. It’s the perfect way to end your winter escape.
