Trying to decide where to stay in Waikiki? We spent ten days in Honolulu and stayed at two very different—but equally memorable—hotels: the Beachcomber Waikiki by Outrigger and the iconic Halekulani Hotel. In this hotel comparison, we break down the pros, cons, and surprises of each to help you choose the right fit for your Oahu vacation.
Beachcomber Waikiki: Budget-Friendly and Beach-Adjacent

We stayed four nights at the Beachcomber Waikiki and found it to be a fantastic option for travelers looking for value and convenience.
What We Loved:
Great location right across from Waikiki Beach
Clean rooms with cheerful, modern decor
Friendly service and a relaxed vibe
The guava bread at Aroma Caffe (yum!)

What to Know:
While not beachfront, it’s just a quick walk to the water. On the way to the water, stop by the Banan Waikiki Beach Shack for a refreshing and delicious dairy-free smoothie or “ice cream” treat.
Pool exists, but it wasn’t a highlight for us. We do not lounge by pools unless our grandchildren compel us to do so.
Ideal for travelers (like us) who plan to be out and about all day.
Our Verdict:
If you’re looking for a clean, quiet, centrally located hotel in Waikiki that doesn’t break the bank, Beachcomber is a solid choice. We’d stay here again without hesitation.

Halekulani: Iconic Luxury with Thoughtful Touches

After our time at the Beachcomber, we checked into the Halekulani — and instantly noticed the difference. From the ocean views to the refined service, this hotel is an experience.
What Stood Out:
No resort fees (a rare and welcome surprise in Waikiki)
Partial ocean view room with a breathtaking view
Bathroom with all the bells and whistles
Turn-down service with nightly gifts
In-room lighting that responds to you
Delicious dining: House Without a Key, Orchids, and Halekulani Bakery

Small Luxuries That Made a Big Impact:
Pre-stocked ice bucket as part of the turn-down service
Personalized hospitality from check-in to checkout
Coffee cabinet that lights up when opened
Serene pool area and well-equipped fitness space
Our Verdict:
If you’re celebrating a special occasion or want to treat yourself, Halekulani delivers an unforgettable experience. Luxurious and thoughtful in every way. You can check out our full review of the Halekulani at Unforgettable Luxury at Halekulani: Your Waikiki Oasis.
