Best Breakfast and Brunch Spots in Porto

Whether you’re after Belle Époque elegance, cozy Ukrainian comfort, or stacks of fluffy pancakes, Porto’s breakfast and brunch scene has a morning for every mood.

Majestic Café – Breakfast in Porto’s Most Beautiful Room

If you’re only going to splurge on one breakfast in Porto, make it here. Majestic Café is a Belle Époque landmark with food that actually lives up to the setting. It certainly charmed J.K. Rowling. According to her biographer, Sean Smith, she worked on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone here. Majestic Café is an ideal spot for lovers of architecture, design, and the Harry Potter books.

When we went, we arrived around 9:00 AM, their opening time. We ordered coffee and tried the Majestic French Toast. Its delicious, yet unfamiliar flavor prompted me to ask what it was topped with. The answer? Sweet egg cream. I’ve also stopped into Majestic Café for lunch with a friend. While the food and service were good, I preferred our breakfast. They also serve dinner, a variety of wines, and cocktails. Majestic Café isn’t just a beautiful stop; it’s a must in any Porto food guide, especially if you love literary history.

Just a short walk away, Visiting Livraria Lello in Porto: A Book Lover’s Dream will take you inside one of the world’s most beautiful bookstores — a must for readers and architecture lovers alike.

STORY | Brunch & Cocktails – Cozy Ukrainian Comfort in Porto

STORY is the kind of place you return to on a grey Porto morning when you want warmth in a cup and something on the plate that feels made for you.

This cozy, Ukrainian-owned brunch spot is my favorite spot to drink a cup of tea in Porto when the weather turns cold. Some of their teas are in sachets, but the ones I love are made with fresh ingredients and change with the seasons. In the winter, I drank Immunity Tea (slices of apple, cinnamon sticks, and honey).

You can order Ukrainian dishes like Syrnyky (fluffy pancakes) or Borscht. STORY’s salmon, bacon, or veggie brunches are available for just €14, and the portions are generous. Their French Toast, topped with berries and served with maple syrup, is divine. When we went, Chris and I shared a sweet version of baked camembert. It was incredible.

Zenith Brunch & Cocktails Porto – All-Day Brunch Worth the Hype

Zenith earns its reputation as one of Porto’s most Instagrammable restaurants without sacrificing the food, and the all-day brunch menu means you’re never too late.

Zenith Porto chicken tacos with teriyaki sauce and guacamoleMeals so pretty they’re Insta-worthy and taste even better than they look. Zenith is a top choice for brunch in Porto. TripAdvisor declared it one of the most Instagrammable restaurants in the world. Zenith serves brunch all day, every day, and has plenty of options for vegans, vegetarians, and dedicated carnivores. Service is cheerful and laid back.

A couple of our favorites are: Chicken Tacos (teriaki sauce, cilantro, guacamole, crispy onion, and jalapeño) and Avocado and Egg Tapioca (wild mushrooms, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, and mixed leaves).

O Diplomata – A Porto’s Pancake Spot Worth the Queue

O Dipolomata is a pancake lover’s dream. They serve fluffy, customizable stacks. You can have them topped with a variety of fruits, candies, butter, syrup, or whipped cream. Scroll through O Diplomata’s Instagram to peek at the possibilities.

You can also find savory items on their menu, such as breakfast sandwiches. Chris went savory for his brunch, while I went sweet. We both drank cappuccinos that were more dessert than coffee: one Oreo cappuccino and one Caramelo cappuccino.

Service is kind. The restaurant is small. When we went, we had to wait in line outside for a bit. We took it as a good sign, and it was.  For pancake lovers, O Diplomata tops the list of cafés in Porto worth queuing for.

Address:
Rua de José Falcão 32, 4050‑189 Porto, Portugal

Hours:
Wed–Sun 9:00 AM–4:00 PM The hours on their socials and Google are different from the hours on their website. I’d trust their socials more, since they don’t even have their menu on their website.

o-diplomata.eatbu.com

Reservation tips:
You can try giving them a call for reservations at 00351 916501477 or arrive early. If the restaurant is full and a queue has started, just get in line behind the last person in it. A server will pop out and chat with you about the expected wait as soon as they have a moment.

Best Lunch Spots in Porto

These are the Porto lunch spots we kept coming back to, from anime-inspired ramen to organic fast-casual that never felt like a compromise.

Ramen Shifu – Porto’s Best Bowl for a Cold Day

On a damp Porto afternoon, Ramen Shifu’s Dragon Ramen — spicy, steaming, and vegan — is exactly what you didn’t know you needed. I love their Vegan Gyozas too. If you prefer a meatier meal, no worries, they have pork, duck, and beef dishes.

Ramen Shifu’s anime‑inspired décor pops. Kiosks at tables make ordering a breeze. Make your selections, and they will appear shortly. Voila.

They’re open for dinner. If you’re someone who prefers to have a variety of wines, beers, and cocktails to choose from with your evening meal, I’d keep this as a lunchtime spot. When we went, the drink selection was limited to red or white wine, sake, or whiskey. There wasn’t a wine list or mixed cocktails of any sort.

Address: Rua de Cedofeita 378, 4050‑126 Porto, Portugal
As I write this, it appears that a new Porto location has opened at Rua do Almada 383, 4000-303.

Hours:
Daily 12:30–16:00 / 7:00 – 11:30 PM at their original Porto location. 12:00 – 3:30 / 7:00 – 11:00 PM at their new spot.

Reservation tips:
We never felt the need for reservations. Just walk in. You might have to contend with a short wait in the early evening on the weekend, but we never did. Their new location takes reservations on Google.

Honest Beans & Honest Greens – Healthy Fast Casual Done Right

Honest Greens is the rare healthy restaurant that doesn’t feel like a compromise. Their meals are organic, fast-casual, and genuinely good on a day when you need fuel without the weight. It’s perfect for a day filled with adventures, because it’s easy and you get to fuel up with food that won’t weigh you down.

Healthy Market Plate with Steak Chimichurri at Honest Greens Porto

At Honest Greens and Honest Beans, you’ll find real (organic and ethically sourced) food that’s tasty and good for you, served fast casual in an earthy, healing atmosphere. While their meals are plant-forward, whether you’re a vegan or a carnivore, you’ll have options.

Chris typically ordered a Market Plate, and I gravitated towards their Garden Bowls. Their proteins (you get to choose) range from Falafels with Tahini Sauce to Steak Chimichurri.

Their desserts are not-so-bad for you. Choices include but are not limited to: Cauliflower Mocha Brownie, Macadamia Miso Cheesecake, and Banana Bread. I’ve had several and can tell you that they are all delectable.

You can order a fancy coffee drink like an Iced Caramel Coco Latte, get a glass and pour yourself a drink at their H2O bar, drink some cold-pressed goodness (happiness, detox, glow, power), or relax with a glass of wine or a bottle of beer.

While this is a great spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, we mostly stopped here for lunch or an afternoon pick-me-up.

Best Market Food in Porto: Mercado do Bolhão

People wandering Mercado do Bolhão produce stalls

Mercado do Bolhão is where we did our grocery shopping, grabbed lunch off the stairs with a glass of wine, and remembered why living in Porto felt like a gift. This spot is a must for anyone curious about local food in Porto. If you’re a foodie heading to Porto, put this spot on your itinerary. The earlier in the day you arrive at the market, the fewer tourists you’ll see. You could get a large cup of fresh fruit or a fresh fruit smoothie and wander around its 79 stalls. If you’d prefer to go midday or later, walk around the multi-story Beaux-Arts building with a glass of wine, getting snacks of this or that to enjoy.

A deli sandwich, a potato ball, and a couple of cookies I purchased at Mercado do Bolhão and brought home for lunch.

There are also several restaurants on the second floor where you can enjoy a sit-down meal. Most vendors take cards, but a few are cash only (mostly fresh vegetable vendors).
