Checking into History: Landmark Inn, Marquette, Michigan

Landmark Inn Exterior in Winter. It's a historic hotel located in Marquette, Michigan.

Walking into the Landmark Inn feels like stepping back in time—in the best way possible. The warm glow of chandeliers, rich wooden floors, and a swanky lounge with a crackling fireplace set the mood for an elegant yet cozy stay. As we entered, the sound of live piano music drifted through the air, adding an extra touch of sophistication. Checking in was seamless, with the front desk staff offering warm smiles and helpful recommendations. Behind them, three clocks displayed the time in Marquette, Higashiōmi (Japan), and Kajaani (Finland)—a nod to Marquette’s sister cities.

Rooms: Sleeping in the Footsteps of Legends

Our stay in Room 502—the Amelia Earhart Room—was unforgettable. Yes, the Amelia Earhart once stayed in this very room, and we couldn’t help but feel inspired by its history. The decor blended vintage elegance with modern comfort, featuring an electric fireplace, stunning views of Lake Superior, and Art Deco-inspired lamps. The hardwood floors added character, though we’d recommend bringing slippers in winter for extra coziness. The bed? Spacious and beyond comfortable.

Drinks and Dining: Classic Cocktails & Cozy Vibes

The hotel’s Northland Pub was our go-to for an evening drink. We sipped on expertly crafted Old Fashioneds with an apple twist, a delightful nod to Michigan flavors. The pub’s warm ambiance made it easy to imagine Hollywood legends James Stewart and Lee Remick unwinding here during the filming of Anatomy of a Murder.  The Crow’s Nest, the hotel’s classy 6th-floor cocktail bar with panoramic views, is worth a visit—though we, unfortunately, didn’t get a chance to check it out this time. We’re happy to have a reason to return.

Amenities: History Meets Comfort

Our Favorite Thing About the Hotel: The History

Few hotels offer such a rich connection to the past. Whether it’s Anatomy of a Murder’s Hollywood ties, Amelia Earhart’s stay, or its reputation as a gathering place for authors and celebrities, the Landmark Inn is a living piece of Marquette’s history. Staying here feels like being part of a grand story.
