Planning a trip to Michigan’s scenic Keweenaw Peninsula? Here’s everything you need to know about staying at this 3-star gem.
Arriving at Hampton Inn & Suites Houghton
From the moment we arrived, we felt genuinely welcomed. Check-in was a breeze, and we appreciated the free parking right out front—especially after a long drive. The lobby was clean and modern, with a warm atmosphere that immediately set the tone for a relaxing stay. The staff was friendly, helpful, and quick to offer local recommendations.
Location: Steps From the Best of Downtown Houghton
Location is everything, and this hotel nails it. Situated on Sheldon Avenue, you’re within a few minutes walk from Houghton’s downtown shops, restaurants, and waterfront trails. Whether you’re popping into a local café or catching the ferry to Isle Royale, the convenience can’t be beaten.
Room Review: 2 Queen Room With All the Essentials

They were sold out of Kings when we booked, so we stayed in a 2 Queen Room with a mini-fridge and microwave, which was perfect for storing leftovers and snacks. The room was sparkling clean and well-appointed with free WiFi, a flat-screen HDTV, and plenty of outlets to charge our devices. We loved having a coffee maker for those early mornings and appreciated the thoughtful touches like an ironing board and fluffy towels.
Bathroom amenities were high quality, and the full shower had great water pressure. For those wanting more space or views, the hotel also offers studio suites and one-bedroom suites, some with balconies and waterfront views. The view from our Double Queen Room was pretty amazing too.

Dining & Drinks: Don’t Miss the Observatory Lounge
Our favorite feature of the hotel? Without a doubt, the Observatory Lounge.
Perched on the 7th floor, this stylish restaurant and bar offers sweeping views of the Keweenaw Peninsula, Portage Waterway, Mont Ripley Ski Area, and even the Ranger III ferry as it glides along the canal.
We both ordered the Beef Wellington, which was perfectly cooked and served with smashed redskin potatoes and broccolini. The cocktails were crafted with care, and our server (who also doubled as bartender) gave fantastic drink and wine recommendations.
Travel Tip: Even if you dine elsewhere, stop by Observatory Lounge for a drink and the view. But really, you should stay for the full meal.
