Old Ground Hotel Review: A Romantic Stay in Ennis, Ireland

Some hotels charm you with luxury. Others with history. The 4-Star Old Ground Hotel, a restored 18th-century manor house in Ennis, manages both with warmth. From reception to the restaurants and room service, the customer service exceeded our expectations. The décor throughout the property is equally calming—pretty chandeliers, decorative ceilings, warm lighting in the hallways, and, my favorite surprise: a bookish reading nook between floors.

Complimentary parking is plentiful, and the hotel’s central location is perfect for wandering Ennis. You can walk to shops, restaurants, and cafés. The Clare Museum, Ennis Cathedral, Ennis Friary, and Daniel O’Connell Monument are nearby as well. Old Ground is an ideal base for walking tours of the city. Here are a few to consider:

A Room Designed for Rest (and Reading)

Deluxe King room at Old Ground Hotel with blue accents and paisley wallpaper

Our Deluxe King room balanced traditional Irish charm with contemporary comfort. Soft paisley wallpaper in neutral hues created a gentle backdrop for pops of blue: the bedside lamps, the headboard, the upholstered chairs by the small round table. A matching lamp perched on the writing desk beneath a welcoming mirror, making it inviting to sit down with a journal or a cup of tea, and a great place to do my makeup while Chris showered.

My favorite hotel rooms have Nespresso machines and tea options. Our room had both a Nespresso machine and a proper teapot, along with  Nespresso pods and Barry’s Gold Tea sachets. Other nice features included real glassware for water and wine, and ceramic mugs for coffee and tea. Drinks taste different in plastic and paper. Glass bottles of water were tucked neatly in the mini-fridge.

I’m also a fan of deep-soaking tubs, and our room boasted that as well. Is there anything more luxurious than a warm bath, a glass of wine, and a great book? It’s one of my favorite ways to end a travel day.

Speaking of great books, if you plan to pack a novel for your journey, you might want to bring one by Enda O’Brien or pick one up from a bookshop in town. There are a few bookshops within a five to ten-minute walk of the hotel: The Ennis Bookshop, Bookstop, O’Mahoney’s, and Easons.

Why an Edna O’Brien novel? The groundbreaking (and controversial) novelist was born in County Clare, near Ennis. She is celebrated in a mural not far from the hotel.

Dining and Drinking at Old Ground Hotel

We started our day in Magherafelt, dropped off a rental car at Belfast City Airport, took a taxi to the station, took a bus to Dublin Airport for the next rental car, and finally drove to Ennis—stopping at Sean’s Bar in Athlone along the way. When creating the itinerary, I suspected we wouldn’t want to leave the hotel for dinner after all that travel. I was right.

Dinner at Town Hall Bistro: Elegant and Memorable

Town Hall Bistro is elegant without being intimidating. Dressing up isn’t required, but it enhances the experience. I’m glad I swapped my jeans and nice top for a dress.

The standout dish was the Roasted Chicken Supreme wrapped in pancetta with smoked cheese and herb stuffing, set in a creamy wild mushroom sauce. Sides—tender broccoli, carrots, and scalloped potatoes—were served family-style. We paired it with a Heart of Stone Sauvignon Blanc, a favorite among locals. One sip and I understood why.

Chris was in his element. Our server teased him about his classic dining mishaps; he volleyed jokes back. Classy music drifted through the room, “Moon River” among the pieces. It felt like stepping into a polished, old-world dinner scene.

Town Hall Bistro wasn’t just “good for a hotel restaurant.” We enjoyed an excellent dining experience, and now that I know just how great it is, I would make dinner reservations there even if we weren’t staying at the hotel.

A Nightcap at Poet’s Corner

Clinking Old Fashioneds at the cozy bar in Poet’s Corner inside Old Ground Hotel

After dinner, we wandered into Poet’s Corner, a bar with its own sense of character. As a poetry lover, how could I resist a bar with a name like that? I ordered a Jameson Old Fashioned, but the bartender intervened. He explained that most Irish whiskeys don’t stand up well in Old Fashioneds; Dingle Single Malt, however, is a revelation in one.

He was right. It was one of the best Old Fashioneds I’ve had in Ireland.

Poet’s Corner is cozy and timeless, a perfect finale to a charming evening.

For a more formal dining experience, you might want to try the hotel’s Brendan O’Regan Restaurant. While we didn’t have a chance to try it, we did walk by. Its atmosphere looks elegant.

Breakfast in Bed (with Pancakes and Jam)

The next morning, I treated myself to room-service pancakes with jam. I didn’t eat them in bed. Doing so sounds indulgent, but it seems awkward to me. I was grateful for the comfortable chairs and the table between them.

Breakfast arrived right at 7:30 A.M., warm and beautifully plated, the kind of morning that lets you ease into the day without losing a moment of travel time.

Should You Stay at Old Ground Hotel?

Old Ground Hotel is more than a place to sleep in County Clare. It’s somewhere to settle in, read, talk with locals, sip something lovely, and feel part of Ennis for a night or two. It’s classic without being stuffy, and warm without being overly informal.

If you’re heading to Clare to visit Burren National Park, the Cliffs of Moher, Bunratty Castle & Folk Park, or the region’s other beautiful sites, this hotel makes an excellent base.

It may have been off-season when we stayed, but it was also a busy week thanks to a trad music festival happening in the days that followed. Even so, our room was only €185 (about $214 USD) per night—a value worth noting.
