Se Catedral Hotel Porto Review: Tapestry by Hilton Stay

Hotel Review: Se Catedral Hotel Porto, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

When we rolled into Porto after a long train ride, I realized I had made a classic traveler’s mistake: I’d booked the wrong Hilton. Porto has eight Hilton properties in the area. I’d meant to reserve Boeira Garden Hotel Porto Gaia, part of Hilton’s Curio Collection across the Douro River. Friends of ours had raved about its charms, and Curio Collection properties are usually our favorite. Instead, I booked Se Catedral Hotel Porto, part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection.

And you know what? We ended up loving it.

Location: Steps from Porto’s Cathedral

The view from our room included Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto). Just a portion of it made it into this picture. It’s the nearest cathedral, located right across the street.

As its name suggests, Se Catedral Hotel Porto sits just a stone’s throw from Porto Cathedral. The location makes it easy to explore the historic heart of Porto on foot. From here, you can wander through narrow streets, cross the Dom Luís I Bridge to Vila Nova da Gaia, and make your way to the city’s famous sites or retreat from the crowds.

First Impressions & Modern Design

Our room felt both playful and cozy, with fun modern touches. Case in point: the neon “Let’s Stay in Bed” sign glowing next to the headboard. Even the bath mat and toiletries carried thoughtful design details small enough to overlook but memorable enough to make the stay feel special.

Food & Drinks: White Port, Pasteis de Nata & More

Chris about to enjoy a White Port & Tonic at Se Catedral Hotel Porto

We don’t often eat full meals at hotel restaurants, but after traveling all day, it felt like the right choice—and it turned out to be a great one.

  • Lunch at the hotel: Chris ordered the Club Sandwich with chips. It was as satisfying as it was scrumptious. The sandwich also came with slices of hard-boiled egg tucked inside, which is a common addition to Club Sandwiches in Portugal.
  • Cocktails: At lunch, we tried White Port & Tonics for the very first time. They were crisp, refreshing, and the perfect start to our stay in Porto.
  • Pasteis de Nata in the room: When we returned to our room after dinner that first night, two custard tarts were waiting for us. These were our very first pasteis de nata, and they set the bar high. They were silky, sweet, and delicious.

The Details That Make a Difference

Se Catedral Hotel Porto delivered on the details:

  • Playful, modern signage and décor that didn’t take itself too seriously.
  • Branded bath mats and toiletries with clever names like Soap Your Troubles Away, Smooth Like a Summer Breeze, and Hair Like a Movie Star.
  • An in-room treat that introduced us to Portugal’s most beloved pastry, the pastel de nata.

Each element added up to make the hotel feel thoughtful and well-designed without trying too hard. Plus, the staff was beyond kind.

Would We Stay Again?

While I still want to experience the Boeira Garden Hotel someday, I have no regrets about staying at Se Catedral Hotel Porto. It offered comfort, style, and a memorable introduction to Porto. From sipping our first White Port and Tonics to biting into our very first pasteis de nata, this hotel ended up being the perfect welcome to the city.

Would we stay again? Absolutely.
