The Emerald House Lisbon: A Hotel We Keep Coming Back To

There are hotels you stay at once, and there are hotels you return to. The Emerald House Lisbon is firmly in the second category (for us). We’ve stayed there four times. Maybe five.  Our first visit was on New Year’s Eve 2023, our last during the Christmas season of that same year, and a couple of trips in between. When a hotel works, it works.

Where It Is

The hotel sits on Rua das Janelas Verdes, “Street of Green Windows,” in Lisbon’s historic Estrela district. It’s a quieter, more residential pocket of the city, which makes it feel like a retreat rather than a tourist hub. But don’t let that fool you: Chiado and Baixa are easily walkable, the National Museum of Ancient Art is across the street, and great restaurants are steps away.

We’ve also Uber’d from the hotel to NOS Alive, one of Lisbon’s biggest music festivals. The rides were easy and affordable. No hassle whatsoever. And when we drove from our place in the Algarve to Lisbon, we found parking across the street with little trouble, even though there’s no on-site parking.

The Hotel Itself

The Emerald House Lisbon is a 4-star boutique property with 63 rooms, part of the Curio Collection by Hilton. The design leans into the neighborhood’s 18th-century heritage: antiques, art, and gold-tone accents. It feels elegant without being stuffy. Thanks to every room being equipped with air conditioning, it also doesn’t feel stuffy.

We typically select a Deluxe King Room with a balcony (featured in the short). The category is spacious and comfortable. The sort you want to spend some time in, rather than just sleep.

A Few Lovely Details

A New Year's Eve Treat at Emerald House Lisbon.

On New Year’s Eve, we arrived in our room to find a card from the Emerald House team, a sugar cookie decorated like a globe, a small bottle of Beirão (a Portuguese liqueur made from eucalyptus, cinnamon, cardamom, and rosemary), and a small plate of pastéis de nata, dates with chocolate, grapes, and a little donut.

Thanks to our Diamond Level Hilton Honors status, we were also invited for a complimentary Amarguinha sour at the bar. It’s a sweet, almond-forward cocktail, with a hint of citrus.

We clinked glasses and called it a very good start to the year.

The Five O’Clock Bar tells the story of D. Catarina de Bragança, who is credited with introducing the tradition of afternoon tea to England. It’s a lovely, intimate space for cocktails throughout the day. A Mesa restaurant blends Portuguese and Italian flavors in the same elegant setting. It’s where I first tried polenta.

The Bottom Line

The Emerald House Lisbon hits a sweet spot: beautiful, well-located, and effortless hospitality. A sensible choice masquerading as a splurge.
