Hotel Review: Torel Palace Porto — A Literary 5-Star Escape
One December evening, Chris and I slipped into the library of Torel Palace Porto, a five-star boutique hotel dedicated to Portugal’s literary greats. Books lined the shelves while others appeared to float overhead, suspended on nearly invisible threads. We settled into armchairs that balanced elegance with comfort. Cocktails from the on-site Blind Restaurant arrived at our side—a scene so ideally conjured it felt destined, the literary masterpiece moment I’d envisioned when booking our stay.

A Boutique Hotel Inspired by Literature
Torel Palace Porto pays tribute to Portuguese literary greats in its design. Each of the 24 rooms and suites is dedicated to an author, complete with artwork and thoughtful details that make you feel like you’re spending the night inside an elegant story. A chandelier hangs above the foot of the bed. Even the scent of the room enchants.
Our room paid tribute to José Régio, one of Portugal’s most influential 20th-century writers. His portrait greeted us at the entrance, setting a contemplative mood. A writing desk held volumes of his work alongside framed photographs and jars of delicate confections, while on the nightstand rested José Régio: Journeys and Speeches of a Life, Isabel Cadete Novais’s evocative photobiography.
The bathroom deserves its own mention—spacious, luxurious, and cleverly designed with an open shower that drains perfectly, thanks in part to its angled floor.

Blind Restaurant: An Experience to Engage The Senses
One of Torel Palace’s most unique highlights is its Michelin Star Blind Restaurant, inspired by Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago’s novel Blindness. The sleek, dimly lit space seamlessly embodies its theme, crafting a moody yet elegant environment for an unforgettable meal. While we enjoyed our drinks upstairs in the library, foodies may want to book the Blind Emotions Menu Dinner Service. Make reservations in advance. We admired the restaurant’s atmosphere at breakfast, which is served from 7:30 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.
