Torel Palace Porto vs Se Catedral Porto: Which Hotel Should You Choose?
When planning a stay in Porto, one of the most exciting decisions is where to call home while exploring the city. Chris and I had the chance to experience two boutique properties with distinctly different styles: Torel Palace Porto and Se Catedral Hotel Porto. Both were memorable, but for different reasons (all of them good). If you’re deciding between these two Porto hotels, here’s what you need to know.
Location and Atmosphere
Torel Palace Porto
Housed in a restored palace, Torel Palace sits in the heart of Porto. It’s a 5-star boutique hotel that pays tribute to Portugal’s greatest writers, creating a refined, romantic atmosphere. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere is one of quiet sophistication, with just enough whimsy to make it unforgettable.
Se Catedral Hotel Porto
As its name suggests, Se Catedral is directly across from Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto). You can step outside and be right in the historic center, with narrow streets, the Dom Luís I Bridge, and the Ribeira waterfront all within easy walking distance. It feels modern, energetic, and convenient—perfect for a first-time trip.
Style + Design
Torel Palace Porto

This is a literary dream hotel. Each of its 24 rooms and suites is dedicated to a Portuguese author, blending historic architecture with bookish details. In our José Régio room, we found his portrait, volumes of his work, and thoughtful touches that made it feel like we were living inside a story. Chandeliers, a luxurious scent, and an enchanting library complete the experience.

Se Catedral Hotel Porto

Playful and contemporary, Se Catedral doesn’t take itself too seriously. Think neon “Let’s Stay in Bed” signs, quirky artwork (like Queen Elizabeth with a goldfish), and branded bath products with witty sayings. It feels stylish and fun while still being cozy.

Rooms + Comfort
Torel Palace Porto
Spacious, indulgent, and luxurious. Our room had a chandelier at the foot of the bed, a perfectly designed bathroom with an open shower, and small touches like jars of confections on the desk. It’s the kind of space you’d want to stay in longer than planned.
Se Catedral Hotel Porto
Compact but cleverly designed. The details shine here—fun neon lighting, clever bath products (“Soap Your Troubles Away”), and a pastel de nata waiting for us on our first night. While not as spacious as Torel Palace, it was plenty comfortable for our city stay.
Food + Drink
Torel Palace Porto
The Michelin-starred Blind Restaurant is a true highlight. Inspired by José Saramago’s novel Blindness, it’s an experience that engages all the senses. Even breakfast here felt elevated, served in an elegant, moody dining room.
Se Catedral Hotel Porto
We surprised ourselves by eating lunch at the hotel after our long travel day—and it turned out to be a great choice. Chris’s club sandwich came with the Portuguese twist of hard-boiled egg tucked inside. It was here that we discovered White Port & Tonics for the first time (crisp, refreshing). Plus, those pastel de nata in the room made for a sweet welcome.
Price + Value
Torel Palace Porto
This is the splurge option. A five-star stay with Michelin dining and literary-inspired design comes at a higher price point, but if you’re celebrating a special occasion or want an unforgettable romantic escape, it’s worth it.
Se Catedral Hotel Porto
Part of Hilton’s Tapestry Collection, this is a more affordable stay in an unbeatable location. It’s stylish without being pretentious, and with Hilton points and perks, it’s easy to get great value here.
Who Each Hotel Is Best For
Stay at Torel Palace Porto if…

You appreciate boutique luxury with Michelin-star dining on site
Stay at Se Catedral Hotel Porto if…

You’re a Hilton loyalist who likes earning or redeeming points
You want a stylish yet affordable option that still feels memorable
Our Take
Both hotels gave us memorable stays, but for different reasons. Torel Palace Porto is indulgent, romantic, and unforgettable—a hotel that becomes part of your Porto story. Se Catedral Hotel Porto is fun, modern, and perfectly located—a great home base for sightseeing and an excellent value.
If you’re dreaming of a splurge-worthy escape steeped in literature, go for Torel Palace. If you’re looking for stylish comfort steps from Porto Cathedral, Se Catedral won’t disappoint.
Whichever you choose, Porto itself will sweep you off your feet.
